What is Tifton 85?
Tifton 85 is a type of Bermuda grass that has to be planted by sprigs and produces no seed. It is very digestible by livestock and has goods level protein content.
I don’t have barn space to store the round bales can I leave them outside?
The design of the round bales was for the purpose of gathering a lot of hay fast and the design weathers well and sheds water like a thatch roof. Of course, there is some spoilage but it will not bother the animals and will last several years stored outside.
How do I handle the hauling and how much can I haul in one load?
When hauling hay, the hauler will need to confirm the specifications on your truck or trailer. In most cases it’s best left to professional truckers and haulers. A flat bed tractor trailer will usually haul a maximum of 32 rolls on a 40 foot trailer but again it could be more or less based on equipment. A flat bed or box trailer can haul as much as 500 small square bales.
What type of payment is accepted for payment?
When hay is purchased it may be inspected and tested prior to pickup but there is a no return policy once it leaves the property. Payment is required in money order, cashier’s check or cash. We will require a name, address and phone number of the purchaser.
Can I contract for hay in advance so the quantity I will desire in the fall will be set aside for me as the hay is harvested rather than a first come basis?
Yes you can contract for hay in advance with a 25% deposit but once the hay is harvested it will need to be picked up in 30 days and paid for in full at pickup.
I am concerned about feeding straight clover to my livestock?
We have heard this concern many times and rather than have to worry about this we plant our crimson clover with rye grass so you get a mix of grasses and the concern of feeding straight clover is removed.
The hay is not green like all the pictures I see in magazines and I see at some farms?
We have heard this many times. The hay being green has nothing to do with nutrition or quality. Our hay often has a nice green color when baled but as soon as it dries out a while under the barn it will turn to a brown or yellow brown color. This has nothing to do with hay color. Some types of grasses will be greener longer than others but it’s more a condition of the moisture content than anything else.
What type of fertilizer does the farm use on the fields?
First of all, it is more important to know what we do not use; we do not use chicken litter or other manures even though that is customary to a lot of farming in this area. We use manufactured fertilizers and dolomite for lime.
What is the price on the hay products or how are they determined?
Prices for the product are based on the current year input costs to produce and the volume being purchased. Also the product type affects the price; the Tifton 85 is a higher quality and a little more expensive than the Bahia grasses.
